In a radius of about 50 kilometers, here are some of the lesser known, though splendid, ancient villages of Calabria….

Along the coast northward……..

PAOLA, an important town in Roman times, it was the birth place of St. Francis of Paula (1416-1507).
Among the sights to see are the St. Francis gate, the Baroque Church of the Madonna di Montevergine, the little Church of the Addolorata, the Church of the Madonna del Rosario, the Church of S. Agostino, the main Church or of SS. Annunziata and the Sanctuary of St. Francis..

GUARDIA PIEMONTESE where, in the days of Frederick II of Swabia, groups of Waldensian refugees from the Piedmont region settled
With its old Provençal language, an amazing heritage of popular poetry and the interesting costumes of the women, it is one of the most intriguing ethno-linguistic islands in southern Italy.

BELVEDERE MARITTIMO is a village of very ancient origin at an altitude of 150 meters.

Interesting sights are the ruins of the Angevin Castle (13th century), the Church and Convent of San Bernardino da Siena, , theOratory of the Confraternity of the Nobles (16th century), palazzo delle Clarisse.

Inland:

LAGO, base for interesting nature hikes at about 500 meters altitude.
Visits include the church of the Annunziata, the church of S. Nicola and the church of S. Maria del Soccorso..

MORANO CALABRO, medieval village in a fantastic scenic position, offers the visitor its Church of S. Bernardino, the Collegiate church of the Maddalena, the Collegiate church of Ss. Pietro e Paolo and the Church of Purgatory. .

MALVITO, an important Longobard garrison, later a bishop's residence. It was a fortified citadel dominated by the Longobard-Norman Castle that in 1057 served as the headquarters of Robert Guiscard. There is also the interesting little Church of Schiavonea of Byzantine origin and an archaeological site at Pauciuri, a little Calabrian Pompeii with Roman and Byzantine ruins.

ALTOMONTE, a village at 500 meters altitude, with a unique view of the mountains of the Pollino and Sila parks. The church of S. Maria della Consolazione is a marvel, once embellished with works by Simone Martini now preserved in the Civic Museum, the Church of San Francesco di Paola, , the Church of San Giacomo, the Norman Tower and the Prince's Castle..

SAN MARCO ARGENTANO, is a citadel of medieval origin, characterized by the greatest monuments of the Norman and Swabian age.
Visits are recommended to the former cathedral of S. Giovanni Battista (or Cathedral of San Nicola) with the crypt and Norman Tower and, 4 kilometers from the centre, the Abbey of S. Maria della Matina..

the Romito grottoin the northern inland area (it takes about two hours to reach the site by car), features a splendid example of Palaeolithic art, the Bos primigenius, a graffito over a meter long of a prehistoric bull. And as long as you've come this far, you might as well go on and visit Papasidero…..
